Statistical Indicators
Education
Postgraduate Education Institutions refer to colleges and
universities, research institutions recruiting and educating postgraduates of master’s
degree, doctor’s degree and other degree upon approval by the government and
under the State Plan.
Regular Institutions of Higher
Education refer to educational establishments
set up according to the government evaluation and approval procedures, recruiting
graduates from senior secondary schools as the main target by National
Matriculation Test. They include full-time
universities, independent colleges and higher professional schools, short-term
vocational colleges.
Adult Institutions of Higher Education refer
to educational establishments, set up in line with relevant rules approved by
the government, recruiting personnel with senior high school or equivalent
educational diploma through national college entrance test for adults, and
providing higher education courses in many forms of correspondence, spare-time,
or full-time teaching for adults. Institutions of higher learning for adults
include schools of higher education for staff and workers, schools of higher
education for farmers, colleges for management cadres, pedagogical colleges,
independent correspondence colleges, Radio and TV universities and other
educational establishments.
Higher Education Institutions refer
to institutions offering higher education upon examination and approval by administrative
departments in charge of education in provinces, autonomous regions and
municipalities, with an education license, which are not eligible for
conferring diploma.
Civilian-run Schools refer to schools and other educational
institutions run by individuals, social groups and other social organizations
upon approval by relevant competent authorities, by using educational funds not
from state revenues.
Diploma Test Institutions refer to other
civilian-run higher education institutions offering full-time higher education
upon special approval by educational administration.
Undergraduate Education shall enable students to
understand necessary basic theories and knowledge of a subject or specialty,
have necessary basic skills, methodology and relevant knowledge of the
specialty, and have preliminary skills for practical work and research of the
specialty. Full-time undergraduate
education offers a basic study term of 4-5 years.
Secondary Technical Education shall enable students
to understand necessary basic theories and special knowledge on applied
technologies of a specialty, have basic skills and
technical application ability for practice of the specialty. Full-time secondary
technically education offers a basic study term of 2-3 years.
Master’s-degree Postgraduate Education shall enable students
to understand solid basic theories, systematic professional knowledge of a
subject, have relevant skills, methodology and relevant knowledge of the
specialty, and have preliminary skills for practical work and research of the
specialty. Master’s-degree
postgraduate education offers a basic study term of 2-3 years.
Doctor’s-degree Postgraduate Education shall enable students
to understand solid and extensive basic theories, systematic and in-depth
professional knowledge, relevant skills and methodology of a subject, have
relevant skills, methodology and relevant knowledge of the specialty, and have
preliminary skills for independent creative research and practical work of the
specialty. Doctor’s-degree postgraduate education offers a basic study term of
3-4 years.
Online Students refer to students for
Internet-based general higher courses, undergraduate courses for adults, and
secondary technical courses recruited in online education colleges opened in
schools as modern remote education pilots approved by the Ministry of
Education.
Employees Enrolled in Graduate Programs refer to students
recruited through national joint test for studies of Doctor’s and Master’s
degrees approved by the Academic Degree Commission of the State Council, in
order to improve the practical skills of on-the-job personnel. Graduated
students will be conferred academic degree only, without academic credentials.
Certificate Education refers education not for
academic credentials, run by various higher education institutions that recruit
management personnel who are graduated from senior high schools and engaged in
professional technical work or strongly professional management work, and
receive a certificate for professional knowledge level meeting the requirements
of their job position after studying in the school and pass the test. It
consists of single-subject program and professional certificate program.
Single-subject Program means that students study
only one or more courses of one subject, and will be awarded a certificate of
completion of single subject.
Professional Certificate Program means that students
study 8-10 courses in the school, and will be awarded a certificate for
professional knowledge at junior college level required for their job.
Occupational Training refers to educational and training activities not for academic credentials, aiming to improve the
competence, run by various higher education institutions. Various trainees will
be awarded Occupational Incumbency Certification and Engagement Certification.
The occupational training is in the form of qualification training and
adaptability training.
Qualification Training means any training for students
to become qualified for being employed (reemployed) on a job, transfer of job,
and promotion as required by job criterion.
Adaptability Training means that students receive
training for adaptability in line with needs of their own job.
Advanced Studies and Trainings means education not for academic credentials, offered for professional and managers with
educational background of college and above, and technical title above middle
rank, to expand their knowledge and improve their skill.
Foreign Students Studying in China refers to foreign students who study in
Number of Graduated Students means the number of enrolled students who are
actually graduated after passing all exams and receiving a diploma upon
completing all courses stated in the teaching plan within the last academic
year. This does not include the number of students completing all courses with
any one course not passed, and students not completing all courses or
discontinuing their schooling.
Number of New Students refers to the number of students actually recruited at the beginning of
an academic year in line with State plan, excluding the number of students
failing to go up to the next grade and those resuming their interrupted
studies.
Number of Enrolled Students means the number of students enrolled at the
beginning of a new academic year.
Number of Students Completing Courses means the number of enrolled students completing
their schooling with one and more courses not passed (including the graduation
paper or graduation design) or other aspects not passed, who are not granted
for graduation and awarded a certificate of completion, excluding the number of
students completing short-term training courses and single-subject programs.
Faculty Number means the number of faculty working in and paid by schools
(institutions). It includes the number of teachers and workers in the principal
campus, in research institutions, school-run enterprises and other
subsidiaries.
Teachers refer
to full-time teaching personnel, including persons temporarily transferred to
other jobs, excluding persons transferred from teaching to administrative
leadership.
Full-time Teachers refer to personnel mainly engaged in
teaching, including persons temporarily (within one year) transferred to other
jobs, excluding persons transferred from teaching to administrative leadership
or other jobs; excluding part-time teachers and teachers taking over a class
for absent teachers.
Schools for Special Education mean schools
recruiting blind, deaf and mute teenagers for primary and secondary education.
Floor Space of Schoolhouse refers to the building area of various houses of which the property
right is owned by the school and which have been used, excluding houses not
completed and under construction, borrowed and rented, or temporarily built
sheds and houses.
Area of Dilapidated Houses refers to the area of those houses that have not been repaired for many
years, have seriously damaged components, are at the risk of collapse, and are
identified by the house administration authority as dilapidated houses.
Area of Land Occupied by School means the area of land within campus, excluding
the area of land for farms and forest land outside schools and school-run
factories.
Budgetary Educational Funds refer to educational funds which are arranged by
central and local finance authorities or upper competent departments in the
year, and which are planned to appropriate to schools and educational
institutions sponsored by educational departments and other departments, which
are involved in the payment subject of State budget, including appropriation
for education career, appropriation for research outlays, appropriation for
capital construction and other outlays.
Culture
Collection of Books in Public Libraries means the number of books collected in
independent libraries open to the public and run by all-level cultural bodies
(excluding book rooms in culture centers, and books collected in libraries not
included in the cultural system).
Arts Performance Venues refer to the various sites for
frequent performance by professional art troupes, open through publicly selling
tickets, sponsored by the all-level bodies responsible for culture or cultural
institutions, provided with audience hall, stage, and lighting. They include
theatres, cinemas, story telling halls, opera halls, acrobatics halls, circus
houses, and concert halls, but exclude open theatres, tea houses, tea saloons,
and sites operating art performance as a sideline.
Art Troupes refer to groups engaged drama and opera,
music, dancing, acrobatics, and other professional art performance, keeping
independent accounts. They exclude spare-time and folk vocational
art performance troupes.
Audience refer
to visitors to art performance for which tickets are sold, as well as free
performance provided on performance sites or in ethical group areas, excluding
visitors to rehearsal review and internal performance.
Radio
and Television
Comprehensive Coverage Rate of Broadcast means the share of population who can receive
broadcasting programs in the target area, calculated in line with Statistical
Standard and Method on Television and Radio Coverage of Population established
by the State Administration of Broadcasting, Film and Television, of the total
population in the administrative area.
Comprehensive Coverage Rate of Broadcast in Rural Area means the share of rural population who can
receive broadcasting programs in the target area, calculated in line with
Statistical Standard and Method on Television and Radio Coverage of Population
established by the National Administration of Broadcasting, Film and
Television, of the total rural population in the administrative area. Rural
area means villages of towns with people’s governments approved by the State
and areas under the jurisdiction of rural towns with organizational system,
excluding towns where people’s governments of counties are located.
Comprehensive Coverage Rate of Radio means the share of population who can
receive broadcasting programs transmitted with short-wave, medium-wave, FM and
other radio transmission technologies in the target area, calculated in line
with Statistical Standard and Method on Television and Radio Coverage of
Population established by the National Administration of Broadcasting, Film and
Television, of the total population in the administrative area, including the
population covered by broadcasting
programs from central, provincial, prefectural cities and county radio
stations.
Comprehensive Coverage Rate of TV means the share of population who can receive
TV programs in the target area, calculated in line with Statistical Standard
and Method on Television and Radio Coverage of Population established by the
National Administration of Broadcasting, Film and Television, of the total
population in the administrative area, including the population covered by TV
programs from central, provincial, prefectural cities and county TV
stations.
Comprehensive Coverage Rate of TV in Rural Area means the share of rural population who can
receive TV programs in the target area, calculated in line with Statistical
Standard and Method on Television and Radio Coverage of Population established
by the National Administration of Broadcasting, Film and Television, of the
total rural population in the administrative area, including the population
covered by TV programs from central, provincial, prefectural cities and county
TV stations. Rural area means villages of towns with people’s governments
approved by the State and areas under the jurisdiction of rural towns with
organizational system, excluding towns where people’s governments of counties
are located.
Comprehensive Coverage Rate of Wireless TV means the share of population who can receive TV
programs transmitted with short-wave, medium-wave, FM and other radio
transmission technologies in the target area, calculated in line with
Statistical Standard and Method on Television and Radio Coverage of Population
established by the National Administration of Broadcasting, Film and
Television, of the total population in the administrative area, including the
population covered by radio television programs from central, provincial,
prefectural cities and county TV stations.
Access Rate of CATV refers
to the percentage of households which can watch television programs by cable
broadcasting and television transmission network (including cable TV households
receiving analog signals and digital signals,
excluding collective subscribers such as hotels, companies and entities, office
buildings), to the total households in the administrative area).
Number of Digital
Broadcast/TV Subscribers means the number of households watching digital-signal TV programs
through the TV and radio cable transmission network.
Number of Pay TV Subscribers means the number of cable TV households watching
digital-signal TV programs through the TV and radio cable transmission network
and paying fees for watching.
